Heavy Handbag? Here’s 6 Tips For A Lighter Purse

Many of us tend to overload our bags with way too much stuff. It's not practical to do this as it can start to get heavy quickly!

And imagine wearing those heavy bags for long hours. Heavy handbags have been the root cause of shoulder and back pain due to their heavy load and unequal weight distribution.

It's so easy to overstuff our handbag and carry our whole life with us, but it’s not practical at all. With some bags, adding a few items will start to make it feel heavy pretty quickly!

I've been in that situation before, carrying everything I own around with me. I would bring my whole makeup routine with me, my wallet that was overflowing with cards, and countless old receipts. The list goes on. I kept justifying it by saying that I "might" need it, so I always brought extra stuff along.

The worst part of it all is when you’re trying to look for your keys in your big bags and it gets mixed up with all the other items in there. At one point, I had to literally sit down and dig through my bag. This has happened to me so many times that I was getting tired of it.

So I've decided to be more mindful of what I take out with me. These are the tips that I have applied to my life, and my shoulders have never felt better.

Here are 6 helpful tips to lighten your purse and give your shoulders a break.

1. Downsize to a smaller purse

Consider downsizing to a smaller purse that will force you to be more selective about what you carry with you. Once I started using a smaller bag, I could notice the difference immediately, and it’s been a lifesaver. I’m now consciously thinking about what can fit in my bag, and I started to carry only the essentials that I needed.

2. Clean out your purse regularly

Dump everything out of your bag and evaluate if you need it or not, then throw it away. Get rid of those receipts in your bag, the makeup that you don’t regularly use, etc. It’s so easy for our bags to hoard all our things for us, but it’s not very practical.

Now, you're starting from a clean slate, and you can pick out the items you’ll need. It’s normal to stuff things in our bags, so it's a good idea to go through your purse regularly and take out any items that you haven't used in a while or no longer need. Clean out your purse as often as you like and create a routine.

3. Use a purse organizer

What I love so much about a purse organizer is how it helps you maximize the space in your purse and makes it easier to find the items you need.

A purse organizer can help keep your purse organized so you don't have to carry unnecessary items or any duplicates. Some bags don’t come with multiple pockets, so getting a bag insert is a game changer. It’ll lessen the headache of searching for your items.

Another option is to buy small pouches and organize all your items. For example, have a small pouch for your makeup staples, your phone charger, your medications, etc.

4. Carry travel-size items of your favorite products

We’ve got to stop putting our full-size products in our bags. It’s taking up so much space in our bag, and it causes the bag to start feeling so heavy. Head to Target or Walmart and get the travel-sized items of your favorite products. Plus, smaller-sized items are so cute!

5. Carry a compact cardholder

If you want a lighter purse, you need to replace your large wallets. Wallets, compared to a cardholder, are a lot bulkier and take up a lot of space. Consider switching over to a cardholder since they’re functional and slim enough to easily fit in the inner pockets of your bag.

6. Limit the amount of makeup

There’s no need to carry your whole makeup with you when you're going out. Take only the items you need for re-touchups during the day and use a small pouch just for your makeup to keep it organized in your bag.

A good tip would be to use versatile products that you can use in at least two or even three different ways. For example, a cream blush that you can apply on your cheeks, use as eyeshadow, or even wear as lipstick
